A Better Way
By changing your focus to what people are doing well and purposely recognizing the safe behaviors you want more of, you will strengthen those safe behaviors, make them more consistent, and at the same time build relationships, trust, morale, and discretionary effort. But it isnât easy. It requires fighting the temptation to manage only exceptions. It requires being deliberate with your use of consequences rather than relying on the default approach of negative reinforcement. While it can be challenging, the payoff for your efforts will be enormous.
